Driving Forces for Responsible AI of the Future


Tuesday 13th / 11:15h - 12:45h


After a short presentation of driving forces extracted from the BDVA’s activity on Algorithmic Transparency, future scenario questions will be discussed in an expert-panel with the goal of developing a view of the main forces that will drive the development of "Responsible AI“ in the next 5-10 years:

  • If you could look into the future of the development of responsible AI, what would you like to know?
  • If the future unfolded according to your wishes, realistically but optimistically, what would it look like?
  • If the future unfolded in the wrong direction, what would you worry about?
  • What are the political, sociological, economic and technological factors driving this topic now and in the future?


Freek Bomhof
Business Consultant & Project Manager at TNO

Freek joined TNO in 2003 and has had several positions there in various application domains, having worked on redesigning business processes for large organizations, and innovation management primarily for SMEs. He has been coordinating the TNO research on Big Data a number of years and he is now a Senior Consultant and Project Manager at the Data Science department. Currently, Freek is focusing on applications of AI in safety and security, for instance in the H2020 TITANIUM project. His main interest is the interplay between technology, and ELSE (ethical, legal, social, economic) aspects, leading him to put emphasis on explainable AI and related issues; a topic that he also works on in his role as taskforce lead in the Big Data Value Association.

Ursula Eysin
CEO & Founder, Red Swan

Ursula Eysin is founder and CEO of Red Swan, a boutique consultancy specialized in scenario processes based in Vienna and an evaluator for technology transfer and new business models with the European Commission. She is an expert in the strategic future process "scenario planning“, the creation of new business models and strategic communication. Mrs Eysin studied Sinology, Business Administration, Theatre, Film & Media Sciences, and Public Relations. She used to work as a production manager and commentator in theatre, opera and film before she became a technology consultant and communication professional. Her broad knowledge and experience in many areas including technology, security, politics, the media and the cultural business enable her to develop insightful future scenarios with the potential to cause real changes in perspectives.

Stefanie Lindstaedt
Scientific Director at Know-Center

Univ.-Prof. Dr Stefanie Lindstaedt is the Head of the Institute for Interactive Systems & Data Science (ISDS) at Graz University of Technology and CEO of Know-Center, Austria‘s leading Research Center for Data-driven business and Big Data Analytics. By annually undertaking more than 50 applied science projects Know-Center effectively bridges the gap between science and industry, already since 2001.


Natalie Bertels
Legal Researcher at CiTiP - KU Leuven - imec

Natalie Bertels is a senior legal researcher privacy and data protection. She specializes in new technologies and the development of data-driven services and products. Her research focuses on the data protection challenges of a big data/cloud/IoT/HPC setting and the methodologies and implementation of privacy by design.

Currently, she is involved in the PRiSE project (Privacy-by-design Regulation in Software Engineering, internal KUL funding, 2017-2021), working on an integrated (legal-technical) risk assessment methodology and in the imec Smart City initiative City of Things. She is the vice-chair of the Policy and Societal Task Force of the Big Data Value Association (BDVA). Before joining CiTiP, Natalie practised law as an IP and ICT law attorney.

Prof John Mark Bishop
Director of The Centre for Intelligent Data Analytics
Professor of Cognitive Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London

J. Mark Bishop (PhD) is Director of The Centre for Intelligent Data Analytics and Professor of Cognitive Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London and a co-opted expert on AI for ICRAC (the International Committee for Robot Arms Control). In these roles Mark has been awarded research funds in excess of £3m and published around 200 articles in the field of Cognitive Computing, addressing (a) theory - where his interests focus on the foundations of the swarm intelligence paradigm "Stochastic Diffusion Processes"; (b) application - where Mark has led numerous real-world projects (ranging from Procurement & HR Analytics and Fraud detection to Autonomous Robotics, Advanced Neural Networks and Space Exploration); and (c) its philosophical foundations – where he has explored the limitations of AI and Neural Computation, most famously developing the “Dancing with Pixies” reductio ad absurdum (a powerful and original argument against the possibility of machine consciousness).

Hermann Erlach
Chief Operating Officer & Digital Transformation Lead, Microsoft Austria

Hermann Erlach has been Chief Operating Officer, Digital Transformation Lead and Spokesman for Innovation Topics since July 2018. He has been a member of the Executive Board at Microsoft Austria since 2015 and most recently headed the Enterprise Services division.

In his role as COO, Erlach now links all business and sales areas with each other in order to ensure optimal added value for our customers and partners.

Before joining Microsoft, the 41-year-old held numerous management positions in international management consultancies such as Capgemini Consulting or Booz & Company. After many years in designing and implementing successful projects, he moved to SAP in 2008, where he held strategically important management positions at both regional/international and local levels.

Prof. Sabine T. Köszegi
Professor of Labor Science and Organization, TU Wien

Prof Köszegi is Full Professor of Labor Science and Organization at the TU Wien and Academic Director of the MBA Program Entrepreneurship and Innovation. She received her PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Vienna. Her current research focus is on issues of social robotics. Sabine Köszegi is chairing the Austrian Council on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence and she is a member of the High-level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence of the European Commission.

Dr Christoph Müller
Member of the Research Group h-a-u-s

Between technology and art, between research and craft, that's where he wants to be. In 2016 Christoph Müller has obtained a doctorate with distinction in interactive robotic architecture supervised by Manfred Berthold. The thesis is about artificial intelligence, robotic modules, which can assemble into an adaptive spatial-installation. Keywords are swarm intelligence, artificial intelligence, self-assembly, handmade robotic architecture and human-robot interaction. His works have been shown at various international conferences. Müller is lecturing TU-Wien, Kunstuniversität Linz and Universität Innsbruck. There will be real movement in architecture.
